Our New Playlist Of Helpful Videos For Job Seekers

Over the past year or so we’ve built up a bit of an arsenal of helpful videos for job seekers here at Network Marketing Towers. Some have been created specifically for our business, others are where we have been videoed whilst presenting at seminars and conferences.

So, we’ve created a playlist that will shortly be added to our website.  We’ll be adding to this playlist with other useful information as we produce it but we think there’s a reasonable amount here to get started with. Have a look at the Top Tips for CV Writing – it’s had over 1300 views!

We hope you enjoy.

We survived the Abbey Dash 2011!

The aptly named Abbey Dash has been and gone again for 2011 and wow, that was a very quick run! A total of well over 8500 runners went across the start line on a cold, grey and foggy Sunday morning (20/11/11) and the three members of team Network Marketing/The Book each had a superb run, with two breaking the elusive one hour barrier and all three achieving a 10km personal best.

Wippet like Emma ‘Tommo’ Thomson was the fastest home in just over 57 minutes, closely followed by Angie ‘Mcduff’ Hough at 59 minutes and a couple of minutes later TeeJay Jones finished. All that blood, sweat and tears during bi-weekly training with the Hyde Park Harriers running club in the last month, was clearly worth although there were some very tired, but happy runners at the end!

Congratulations must also go to honorary members of team network, Roger Brearley who ran for the Willows Wish charity and Paul Jones.  Both ran incredibly well on the day in their first 10km. Nice running boys!

Age UK has been organising this race for over 20 years, and this weekends race was as well organised and fast paced as it always is. An hour after the last person crossed the line, you’d never have known there had been a large race taking place that moring. The cleaning crews were incredibly efficient. They managed to raise over £200,000 and had a huge response from the public in support of the ‘Spread the warmth’ campaign. Through donations from the public, they managed to collect hundreds of coats and jackets that will help keep people warm through what promises to be a very cold winter.

The CIM Pitch 2012 ft. Network Marketing

When the guys at onlymarketingjobs.com advised us about the opportunity to be involved with the Chartered Institute of Marketing’s 2012 Pitch Competition we grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

The pitch is a national competition run by the CIM to give marketers the opportunity to pitch a campaign idea to a defined brief.  This year the challenge was to raise awareness of the issues of diabetes across the UK for the charity Diabetes Awareness Group.  There are 3 regional competitions and the winners of each battle it out for the potential for their marketing strategy to be rolled out across the UK.

We’re always on hand to give our candidates advice on their CV’s so it came naturally for us to support the contestants of this event who will no doubt be some of our future candidates too. After each team had presented their idea we reviewed their CV’s with them and advised as to how they can maximise the impact of it in securing their next marketing job. We met a range of marketers from current university students through to marketing managers and product managers. The quality of CV’s varied but with the help of Julie Storey, Miles Zerny and Tom Fordham they all walked away with a stronger resume than they came with.  All delegates were also pointed to our careers advice videos on youtube where they can gain advice on Writing CV’s, Interviewing Skills, Preparing For Interviews and Managing your Reputation On-line.

When all the presentations had been completed a final three were selected and presented against each other. The variety of ideas coming from just these three was diverse and the quality of each excellent especially given only two weeks to prepare on a subject that none of the contestants had any knowledge of. The winning group included a placement student from one of our favourite Leeds marketing agencies and was thoroughly deserved with great creative thinking and a well managed budget that could be adapted to suit the available funds.

We’ll certainly be supporting the Northern team to go all the way and have no doubt that with their revised CV’s the folk we met will have no trouble securing the next marketing job.

Good luck to all!

Yorkshire’s Creative Stars Awarded!

Last night the creme de la creme of Yorkshire’s creative world came together to celebrate the work of 2011!  Representatives from the advertising, design and digital worlds’ in Yorkshire joined together at the annual Cream Yorkshire Awards which celebrates those working in creative agencies as well as clients and in-house teams.

It was great to see so many local agencies recognised for their achievements. Savvy, based in Leeds, were awarded the Grand Prix Award for their overall work this year- the most prestigious award of the night! Their work for clients such as Soreen and Asda were also recognised. Leading brand design agency Elmwood won a string of awards, including being recognised for their work in the Craft, Corporate Identity, and Publications categories. It was good to see them also being awarded for their work promoting their own product Make Mine A Builders- tea bags you will see sitting on the shelves on a supermarket near you!

A big congratulations to everyone! Here are a full list of winners.

The celebrations continue tonight with the annual DADI Awards being held at Savilles, celebrating achievements in the digital sector.  Come and have a chat to our guys there – Rajvir, Julie and Angela – they might even buy you a drink!

Recruiters Using Social Media to Screen Candidates

One of our eagle eyed recruiters, Teejay Jones, spotted this Mashable infographic on linked in the other day and it’s caused some debate through the office so it’s definitely worth a look.

How Recruiters Use Social Media to Screen Candidates

Here they’re suggesting that recruiters are making good use of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and linked in, to help screen candidates before making offers of employment. We’re not sure where they get their statistics from (the figures seem to be excessively high) but we have to question the idea that such predominant use of Facebook is either possible (unless privacy settings are not in force) or indeed fair.

We have to find the balance between getting to know out candidates as well as possible in order to represent them effectively, but also to assess how well they might suit our clients. But where do you draw the line between the personal and professional information available on the web? And what do you take into account? People are often completely different in work to how they are out of work. So in this instance, is the information superhighway a real disadvantage for both the candidate, who has to be so aware of privacy settings, and us as responsible recruiters who have to find decide how far to take access to information?

There’s an interesting debate looming and no doubt legal cases forthcoming if an offer of employment is made to a candidate and then retracted. Could employers be seen as discriminatory if they go down this route?
